The History of Trinity School

On September 10, 1951, Trinity School opened with a class of 20 four-year-olds in the basement of Trinity Presbyterian Church. The School opened in response to a growing need for an early elementary educational program with the vision of providing a nurturing environment in which to challenge students.

The 1960s were a time of change and turbulence throughout the Southeast as the Civil Rights Movement gained momentum. With the leadership and full support of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Trinity School became the first private school in Georgia to integrate in 1963.

The School continued to grow throughout the 60s and 70s. Grades First through Seventh were added, and in 1964, the School’s first class of Seventh Graders graduated. In 1973, Trinity's Board elects to become independent while maintaining formal relations with Trinity Presbyterian Church. The School moved to a seven-acre campus located at 3254 Northside Parkway, formerly the Birney School, in 1980. Programs for two- and three-year-olds were also added that year as the School acquired The School in the Woods.

Support for the School expanded throughout the 80s and 90s, and several capital campaign efforts helped to strengthen Trinity’s financial stability and enhance learning spaces throughout the facility. In 2001, the School embarked on a $28 million campaign to build a new 130,000-square-foot facility on 43 wooded acres in the Buckhead community.

This new campus opened in 2002 and provided an ideal environment for learning. The 43-acre campus includes walking trails and several outdoor play areas. Interior spaces were specifically designed with the elementary learner in mind. Classrooms are open and inviting with flexible spaces that encourage both collaboration and independent learning.

Today, Trinity is one of the Southeast’s leading independent, co-educational schools. It is a community like no other, where children, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and Trustees remain committed to one idea: helping you flourish so that you may achieve your unique potential.
